Leather Thickness

In leatherworking, thickness is often measured in ounces, with one ounce of leather equating to approximately 0.4mm (1/64") in thickness. However, it's essential to note that hides rarely maintain an exact 0.4mm (1/64") thickness throughout due to natural variations. Even hides processed through splitting machines may exhibit slight inconsistencies. Remember, as the ounces increase, so does the weight and durability of the leather. Selecting the appropriate thickness ensures the success and longevity of your leather projects. The chart below provides a general thickness guideline and their applications.
